We’re hiring a Community & Platform Lead at MCJ
Seeking a unique candidate to join at an important time!
My Climate Journey (“MCJ”) finds itself at a crossroads of opportunities in demonstrating a new model to address climate change. We’re looking to hire someone to spearhead our ambitions for the MCJ community. The right person will be deeply interested in climate change, have experience with community management and events management, and be interested in how community, technology, and influence can come together to help us all solve the climate problem. We plan for this role to start on a consulting-basis and eventually transition to a full-time position, once we feel there’s a good fit.
About MCJ
MCJ’s mission is to mobilize action towards addressing the formidable challenge of climate change. It does this through a platform that harnesses the power of content, community, and capital to empower climate-motivated individuals. Since MCJ’s beginning in 2019, we’ve made great strides toward this vision:
Content: Through the MCJ Podcast, we’ve published over 200 conversations with a myriad of climate experts, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders and have amassed a following of listeners seeking to learn about climate and pivot their careers towards it.
Community: Beginning as a way to foster a “climate tribe,” the MCJ Slack community has developed into one of the most pronounced and highly-engaged aspects of the MCJ experience. This global network of >1.1K dues-paying members have forged relationships, organized events (both virtual and IRL), and have built companies, non-profits, and other initiatives focused on climate.
Capital: Pioneering a new model of venture capital, MCJ Collective has built a portfolio of 28 companies (and growing) in its first 9 months of operation, and is currently pacing to deploy ~$10MM annually (and growing) across a wide range of climate tech startups and industries.
Our underlying belief is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and that each of these “pillars” represents a critical and synergistic component of the entire platform.
Currently, we’re seeking an entrepreneurial person who can develop and execute on a vision to make MCJ the leading climate community. Because of the need and interrelated nature of the MCJ platform, the ideal candidate will also gain an understanding of and substantially contribute to priorities in the other pillars, as well.
Responsibilities
Your primary mission is to build a community that provides value to members, portfolio founders, and LPs, as well as supports other critical aspects of the platform:
Community Leadership (50%)
Develop a community roadmap that delivers value to the aforementioned community stakeholders in a measurable and lean way and works together with leaders from within the community to define it and bring it to life.
Organize events and programs, and work to encourage and support community members with their initiatives, as well.
Own the outcome by being the expert (and reporting internally) on the “health” of the community, and having an opinion on how to improve it.
Represent the voice of the member by having a qualitative and quantitative understanding of her community experience and sharing that knowledge across key stakeholders.
Content Development & Distribution (25%)
Own the MCJ Newsletter, ensuring it’s well written and optimizes for quality.
Support podcast production by helping with guest scheduling, selection and publishing.
Fund Communication (25%)
Assist with various forms of investment communications and content, such as memos, announcements, and LP reports.
What we’re looking for
Our ideal candidate has the following qualities:
Experienced in community building. This doesn’t have to be through a formal company role.
Analytically rigorous and well versed in how to measure and optimize for a subscriber-based business model.
Embodies an “owner” attitude in terms of leading with action, consistently thinking of how to improve the status quo, and being accountable for the outcome.
Has clear and articulate written communication.
We’re a distributed team and hire globally; however, it’s important for candidates to have significant overlap with Eastern Time working hours. We realize this may be too challenging for some parts of the world.
Why you might be interested
This is not a traditional job. It offers a rare opportunity to work in a startup environment at the intersection of climate tech, vertical social networks, and venture capital. Whether you aspire to join, invest in, or found your own company, this role will give you direct exposure to opportunities in those areas. And if you are looking to work in climate, this role will put you inside a small team that is right in the thick of the action.
Whom you’ll be working with
You’ll work with a small and close-knit team led by Jason Jacobs, previously founder/CEO of Runkeeper (acquired by ASICS). You will also engage daily with a vast community of MCJ members, guests, portfolio founders, etc. whose backgrounds span a wide range of industries and skillsets.
How to apply
We invite you to apply using this email link (subject “Community & Platform Lead”) and sharing information about yourself and why you’re interested in the role. Please also include a link to your LinkedIn or attach your resume.
And if this is not a good fit for you or not the right timing but you think it is cool, feel free to share it far and wide :)
Thank you! 🙏
