Hey everyone,
We are gearing up for our first in-person team meeting at MCJ this week! Prepping for that has been a good forcing function to really synthesize my thoughts on where MCJ is and where it is going, and to surface key issues and decisions we’ve been wrestling with. One example is geographic coverage. We have done some episodes and have some representation in the community outside of the US, but the US is where we’ve been spending most of our time, due to resource constraints of our tiny team. But directionally, this can’t continue, as climate is a global problem and it will take unprecedented global action and collaboration to put us on a better course.
There are many other examples, like that one, of challenges/opportunities we face and need to sort through as we gear up to scale. Our meeting is this Thursday and the MCJ Town Hall is Friday, so if you want a download on what we covered and where we are heading, make sure to sign up for the Town Hall.
We also wanted to take an opportunity to recognize someone from the community who has been a wonderful source of help over the past couple of months. MCJer Sophia Cowles has provided consistent feedback and editing assistance with MCJ Collective’s investment announcements (on a volunteer basis, thank you, Sophia!), and she recently, assumed the role of Community Director at the DER Taskforce. Thanks for your help, and congrats on the new role.
Have a great week!
Jason & Team MCJ
🎙Episodes
This week's episode is a lively conversation with Garry Cooper, Co-Founder & CEO of Rheaply. Rheaply is empowering companies of all stripes to reduce their CO2e footprints by curbing internal waste. It does this by creating a circular economy of reuse, both within a company and through a marketplace of asset exchange with other companies. You can learn more about Rheaply in our prior investment announcement here.
✨Highlights
Climate News this week! Nongovernmental organizations and tech and entertainment giants including Amazon, Netflix, and Disney announced a partnership to pool solutions on scaling funding for response to climate change. A number of ecological studies and headlines this week from The Guardian. According to a report by the UN Environment Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organisation, governments must deliver on a commitment to restore at least 1bn hectares (2.47bn acres) of land by 2030 and make a similar pledge for the oceans. Researchers discovered that Arctic ice is thinning twice as fast as previously thought. The faster ice loss means the shorter northeastern shipping passage from China to Europe will become easier to navigate, but it also means new oil and gas extraction is more feasible. Scientists on Thursday announced the climate crisis is suffocating the world’s lakes. Falling oxygen levels will harm already struggling wildlife and drinking water supplies. ForeignPolicy.com writer Benjamin N. Gedan, calls upon President Biden to Pursue an Environmental Treaty for the Western Hemisphere at this year’s triennial Summit of the Americas.
