or perhaps you’ve seen his viral investigative Twitter threads reporting on climate misinformation. Maybe you’ve gone down the rabbit hole of his new(ish) YouTube channel, where he explores the politics of climate change. And if you haven’t heard of any of his work… you’re in for a treat.Michael Thomas is making a name for himself in independent investigative climate journalism, and Cody chatted with him this week about some of the stories he's written and the investigations he's done recently. Michael also shared his advice for anyone feeling the itch to get started with something that they might not have prior experience in. Spoiler alert: involves a strong willingness to embrace and learn from failure.
We also heard from McGee Young, founder and CEO at WattCarbon. WattCarbon knows the hour-by-hour carbon intensity of the grid for every building in the USA, and it helps identify the real-time carbon savings of distributed energy resources, such as heat pumps, rooftop solar, and storage in commercial buildings. We covered McGee’s transition from academia and political action into entrepreneurship, challenges with how we think about carbon accounting today, and WattCarbon’s software solution for the built environment.
And finally on Jason’s Capital Series, we heard from Amy Francetic, a General Partner at Buoyant Ventures. Buoyant Ventures partners with early stage companies that can rapidly deploy and scale bold solutions, homing in on software and simple hardware.
Amy and Jason talked about the origin story of Buoyant Ventures and some of the behind the scenes details of the process of raising their first fund. They also talk about their strategy for deployment, some examples of investments they've made to date, and how their work fits into the broader climate tech capital stack.
